Events on Display
If you’ve never been to a rodeo before, you may not know what to expect. The following are several events that you can enjoy while you’re here.
Bareback Riding: One of the most physically demanding events in rodeo! Each contestant hangs onto the horse using only a custom-fitted handhold, and the cowboy must ride a 1300-pound bucking horse using only one hand for 8 seconds in order to register a qualified ride.
Team Roping: This is the only team event in rodeo. It requires two cowboys working together to rope a steer which was required on the open range to doctor and brand cattle back in the day. The event is judged on how fast both cowboys can rope the steer.
Barrel Racing: A crowd favorite at rodeos. This event demonstrates both the athleticism of the rider and the speed of the horse they’re riding. In this event, a cowgirl races into the arena at full speed on a sprinting horse and blazes through a cloverleaf pattern around three steel barrels, and sprints back out of the arena. This event is based on speed, and should a barrel be overturned, the rider receives a five-second penalty.
